El Futuro Clásico

 

Llegó uno de los eventos dominicanos de moda más importantes: la introducción de los diseñadores de moda noveles al mercado nacional. El viernes 17 de mayo, los estudiantes de término del departamento de Diseño de Modas de La Escuela de Diseño de Altos de Chavón presentarán 54 salidas en la pasarela del Salón Flamboyán de Casa de Campo, en La Romana.

Los 18 estudiantes de la clase graduanda se han enfocado en el tema “Futuro Clásico”, trabajando cada uno en tres salidas: ready-to-wear, gala femenina y gala masculina. Los estudiantes desarrollaron el concepto tomando los conocimientos adquiridos durante sus estudios y reforzándolos con investigación para aplicarlo a su estilo individual.

Los estudiantes interpretaron el tema de maneras diferentes. Jailene Pérez Santana, por ejemplo, vee su colección como “el retorno del minimalismo”; para Jonathan Medina, “el futuro clásico no sólo es marcar un estilo, sino crear una nueva filosofía de vida”, mientras que Zaide Caraballo explica que “es la representación de siluetas o elementos que han marcado el pasado, convirtiéndose en un icono de manera atemporal.”

“Es un grupo de estudiantes muy talentoso y trabajadores. Les exijo mucho a cada uno de ellos, y lo más importante es que ellos compiten con sus propias capacidades. Siempre hay buena vibra entre ellos”, dijo Alida León, directora del departamento de Diseño de Modas. León, una diseñadora de modas puertorriqueña y egresada de Parsons The New School for Design, pujo como lema en el curso “sostenibilidad”, con el objetivo de aportarles la realidad de la industria a los estudiantes, mientras ellos le brindan la fantasía de sus diseños.

La creación de estos atuendos ha sido supervisada este año por diseñadores dominicanos de renombre internacional, también egresados de La Escuela de Diseño: Joel Díaz (ready-to-wear), Julio Marcano (gala femenina) y José Jhan (gala masculina). Asistieron a los estudiantes durante las pruebas de vestuario y los guiaron para que cada una de las piezas salga de manera exitosa a la pasarela. La noche del evento estos tres diseñadores, quienes también son críticos de las vestimentas, entregarán a los estudiantes meritorios los premios dedales de plata y ámbar.

Año tras año La Escuela de Diseño de Altos de Chavón ha contribuido a forjar a quienes han puesto el nombre del país en alto a nivel nacional e internacional, diseñadores como Luis Domínguez, Luis Hidalgo, Belkola, Moisés Quezada, Laura Guerrero, Juan Cotes y Carlos Frank Then. Así es que para los 18 jóvenes diseñadores de la clase de 2013, estudiar en La Escuela de Diseño de Altos de Chavón ha sido el primer paso a una carrera que va a demandar mucho tiempo y esfuerzo, pero un paso que verdaderamente augura éxito.

 Classic Future

 

One of the most important Dominican fashion events has arrived: the introduction of the latest group of up-and-coming designers to the local fashion industry. On Friday, May 17, the graduating class of The Altos de Chavón School of Design Fashion Design department will present 54 garments on the runway of Casa de Campo’s Salón Flamboyán, in La Romana.

“Classic Future” is the theme on which the 18 seniors have focused, with each student working on three garments: ready-to-wear, women’s evening wear, and men’s evening wear. Using research to build on the knowledge they acquired during their studies, the students developed and adapted the theme to their individual style.

The students interpreted the theme in different ways. Jailene Pérez Santana, for example, sees her collection as “the return of minimalism”; for Jonathan Medina, “the classic future isn’t just a style, it’s the creation of a new philosophy of life”; while Zaide Caraballo explains that “it’s the representation of silhouettes or elements that have marked the past, turning them into timeless icons.”

“This is a very talented and hard-working group of students. I demand a lot from each of them, and the most important thing is that they rely on their own abilities. There’s always a good vibe among them,” said Alida León, chair of the Fashion Design department. León, a Puerto Rican fashion designer and graduate of Parsons The New School for Design, made “sustainability” the class motto, to give the students a reality check vis-à-vis the industry, while the students bring to her the fantasy of their designs.

The creation of the garments was supervised this year by Dominican designers of international renown, who are also Chavón alumni: Joel Díaz (ready-to-wear), Julio Marcano (women’s evening wear), and José Jhan (men’s evening wear). They assisted the students during fittings and guided them so that each of the pieces would have a perfect turnout. On the night of the show, these three designers, who also serve as critics of the garments, will award silver and amber thimble prizes to deserving students.

Year after year, the Altos de Chavón School of Design has helped shape designers who have raised the country’s fashion image nationally and international designers such as Luis Domínguez, Luis Hidalgo, Belkola, Moisés Quezada, Laura Guerrero, Juan Cotes, and Carlos Frank Then. It follows that for these 18 young designers of the class of 2013, studying at the Altos de Chavón School of Design has been the first step in a career that will demand much time and effort, but one that truly augurs success.
